Beautiful photographs, easy and delicious preparations... The entire book is a poem to fruits!
Yes, fruits can even be made into cloth and flour! And using them in cakes, as this book proposes, is the least expected thing due to so many possibilities they give us!
The book
It is not a very extensive book, but in its few pages, there is a whole magical world combining fruits and spices expressed in European and American preparation methods, such as moist cakes, crumble, from England, crisp, betty, cobbler and slump, from the United States (and also from England), clafoutis from France, and strudel, closely associated with German cuisine, but with origins in Austria and Hungary.
There are almost seventy recipes that we can find with the help of its two indexes, by type of preparation and alphabetical index, including recipes by title.
The book is wonderfully illustrated. There are two pages for each recipe, on one side there is a photograph of the preparation, and on the second, in almost all of them, a photo of the fruit used in the recipe. At the beginning of each session there is also a full page photograph of one of the pleasures you may encounter while reading.
Due to its measurements and volume, it is more suitable to have in the kitchen for consultation.
This book was published for the first time in England, in 2010, by Ryland Peters and Small, with the title Cinnamon, spice and warm apple pie - comforting baked fruit dessert for chilly days. The text is by Fiona Beckett, Tessa Bramley, Maxine Clark, Ross Dobson, Tonia George, Brian Glover, Caroline Marson, Laura Washburn and Ryland Peters and Small.
Special ingredients
All the images are a delight, but the most important thing is that it gives us an exact idea of the result and shows that, visually, it will be worth it to begin with!
Something cool to note is that there are some recipes that use cheese, like the Pear, Almond and Mascarpone Tart, the Pear, Gorgonzola and Walnut Tart and the Cherry and Ricotta Strudel, they must be wonderful!
And ten other recipes include a drink, such as liquor, Betty's pina colada rum, red wine and even soda!
I must talk about green apples, because they are my favorites, in the book there are four recipes with them, and some substitutes are proposed, but in the alphabetical index only one recipe is mentioned...
The recipes
The recipes are simple to prepare, and the ingredients are easy to find, except for some fruit, which depending on the region you are in, you may not find in its natural state of ripeness... The good thing is that in most of the recipes the authors suggest another fruit just in case, if we don't have it or the one indicated in the recipe isn't to our taste.
My favourite recipe, due to the originality and quantity of ingredients, easy execution and the final result, and the one I tested (and approved!), the one that uses a croissant, the Bread Pudding with Fig and Honey, which despite the title, you will see that the ingredients do not include bread*, but croissants, ok!
It's simple and delicious! In addition to this, other recipes I chose to try were Apple and lemon cake and Caramelized banana crumble…
*There are four recipes with bread, which in itself, in addition to fruit, is another of your favourite ingredients!
My impression
The book is beautiful and practical and makes it easy for us to introduce fruit into desserts, without much effort, with many varieties and in different textures, just look for the most suitable one for the occasion with whom we want to impress!
